Women’s Lacrosse Begins Season With Win

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team persevered over Worcester State with a double-digit win Tuesday night, taking down the Lancers with a final score of 14-4.
 
Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, Conn.) opened the game with a goal in the opening two minutes, taking a pass from Kaelin Hogan (Bethel, Conn.) to put RWU up 1-0. Worcester State tied the game at 27:21 with an unassisted goal from Kelly Austin (Brimfield, Mass.), then took the lead on a goal from Mackenzie Little (Marlborough, Mass.) seven minutes later.
 
Roger Williams would come back with seven unanswered goals over the final 20 minutes of the half. Stoeppel scored three times for the Hawks over that stretch, with Hogan, Carly Martin (Scituate, Mass.), Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine), and Shayne Rivard (Easton, Conn.) each adding goals.
 
The second half started with an attempted goal by Martin which shortly got taken away due to an illegal stick in the first 10 minutes. RWU quickly made up for the illegal play with a goal from Stoeppel with an assist from at 24:05. Worcester State fought back less than a minute later with a goal from Kaylee Krajewski (Holyoke, Mass.) putting the score at 3-9.
 
The Hawks tallied three more points in the matter of two minutes with goals from Hogan, Paige Byrne (Clifton Park, N.Y.), and Sarazin putting the score at 12-3 at 19:20. Mackenzie Little (Marlboro, Mass.) scored a goal for the Lancers at 17:58 to bring the Lancers within eight.
 
Both teams remained scoreless for nearly 12 minutes until Stoeppel was able to score with an assist from Delana Erickson (Concord, N.H.) at 6:01. Hogan scored the Hawks' last goal with an assist from Sarazin at 1:52, putting the final score at 4-14.
 
Hogan led the Hawks with eight points on three goals and five assists. Stoeppel contributed with six goals and Sarazin contributed five points (2 G, 3 A).
 
Leading the Lancers was Mackenzie Little (Marlboro, Mass.) with two goals. Austin and Krajewski each scored a goal.
 
Roger Williams (1-0) will be heading to Keene State on Saturday. Worcester State (0-1) will be heading to Gordon College on Thursday.
