Women’s Lacrosse Drops First Contest Of The Year

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 6-18 to #16-ranked SUNY Cortland.

The Hawks traveled northwest to Springfield College to play host to the visiting Red Dragons.

The game was a tale of two halves, as the Hawks hung tight with SUNY Cortland. It was a defensive battle for both teams, as the two sides forced turnovers while keeping scoring opportunities to a minimum. However, SUNY Cortland turned it on in the second half and used an offensive surge to pull away from RWU.

Katie Wolfe (East Amherst, N.Y.) started the game off with a goal 1:27 into the game for a 1-0 Red Dragon lead. Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine) came back with a goal for RWU three minutes later, while Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, Conn.) put the Hawks up 2-1 with a free position goal.

Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Hannah Tiso (Somers, N.Y.) regained the Red Dragon advantage with back-to-back goals. Yet Stoeppel, Kaelin Hogan (Bethel, Conn.), and Carly Martin (Scituate, Mass.) notched the next three goals to give RWU a 5-3 lead with 2:26 left. The Hawks looked poised to go into halftime with the lead, but SUNY Cortland scored three quick goals in a 30-second stretch to go ahead 6-5 going into the break.

In the second half, Lorenzen and Lexie Meager (Syracuse, N.Y.) helped make it an 8-5 game as each scored over the first five minutes of play. Martin responded with a goal to bring the Hawks back within two. Unfortunately for Roger Williams, that would be the final goal of the half as Cortland scored ten unanswered goals to break away from RWU.

The turning point came at the with just under 15 minutes to play, as the Red Dragons rattled off six goals in a six-minute stretch, extending their lead from three to nine.

Annie Casey (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made four saves in win for the Red Dragons. Meager finished with a game-high six points on five goals and one assist. Lorenzen and Carly Stone (Syracuse, N.Y.) each added three goals for SUNY Cortland.

Lydia Nelson (Center Moriches, N.Y.) tallied eight saves in the game for RWU. Martin and Stoeppel each scored twice. Lauren Flahive (Foxborough, Mass.) and Serena Murphy (Brewster, N.Y.) each finished with three caused turnovers.

Roger Williams (4-1) will travel to Bates on Wednesday, while SUNY Cortland (4-1) will host Ithaca College on Tuesday.
