NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Jen Fox Sargent has recently accepted a position to be the new head coach at her alma mater Merrimack College, as it was announced recently. Fox Sargent, a 2009 graduate from Merrimack, returns to coach the NCAA Division I Warriors after spending four seasons leading the Hawks.
Fox Sargent came to Roger Williams in summer of 2017 from Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Endicott College, where she was an assistant, and looked to maintain the Hawks' run of excellence atop the CCC. In her first season at the helm, RWU went 13-4 (7-1 CCC) while finishing as the runner-up in the conference behind just the Gulls. She earned conference Coach of the Year honors for her efforts while seven players earned All-CCC recognition including Emily Stoeppel as CCC Defensive Player of the Year and Kaelin Hogan being named CCC Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season.
2019 saw much of the same success for the Women's Lacrosse team. A 13-6 (7-1 CCC) record, seven All-CCC players, and a second consecutive Coach of the Year honor. However, the team once again fell short in the CCC championship falling to Endicott in overtime.
Following the cancellation of the 2020 season due to COVID-19, the Hawks roared through the CCC, finishing their abbreviated regular season 5-0. After advancing to the CCC championship due to a no contest, the Women's Lacrosse program got over the hump, defeating Endicott 14-8 to win their second CCC Championship in program history. They then followed that up with their first-ever win in the NCAA tournament, beating Westfield State 18-13, before falling in the third round to Tufts. In addition, her senior midfielder
Lauren Flahive (Foxborough, Mass.) was named an IWLCA All-American, the first-ever RWU Women's Lacrosse All-American.
Fox Sargent finishes her tenure as the head coach of the Hawks with a 35-14 career record, the third-most wins in program history, and the best winning percentage among head coaches with more than 20 games coached for the program.
"Jen made a huge impact to RWU during her four years on campus," said
Kiki Jacobs, Director of Athletics, Intramurals, and Recreation. "Not only did she help the team to new heights, but she brought a contagious energy to her team and the department. Her positive, can-do attitude will be missed."
A national search for the next RWU Women's Lacrosse is currently underway.
