Beck Receives Major Award, Women’s Lacrosse Claims Nine All-CCC Selections

BIDDEFORD, Maine – At the conclusion of their second-consecutive unbeaten conference schedule, the Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team cleaned house in the Commonwealth Coast Conference awards placing nine on the All-CCC teams in addition to Mandy Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.) claiming CCC Offensive Player of the Year, as it was announced by the conference offices on Friday. The Hawks lead the conference in selections to the top team as Ryleigh Cavanaugh (Manchester, N.H.), Nikki Norton (Braintree, Mass.), Madi Drain (Waterboro, Maine), and Hannah Goodwin (Bradford, Mass.) all joined Beck on the All-CCC First Team.

Receiving second team recognition for RWU is Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine), Lily Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.), Kimmy Creegan (Ramsey, N.J.), and Brooke McErlain (Hampton, N.H.) giving the Hawks the most selections on the second team as well. The nine total all-conference selections match the program-best number from 2016. In addition, every All-CCC selection that Roger Williams collected were on the first and second teams blowing away the next highest total of six on the top-two squads by Western New England University.

The Hawks rolled following a season-opening loss to Springfield College, finishing 14-1 overall, good for the winningest regular season in program history. They also went a perfect 8-0 against CCC foes to post their second-straight undefeated season in conference play to clinch the top seed and a first-round bye in the conference tournament beginning for them on Wednesday, May 4th.

While four members of the Hawks are first-time honorees, earning All-CCC distinction is old hat for Drain and Sarazin as they have been named all-conference in each season they have played, with the exception being the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, earning their third and fourth career selections respectively. The second-time honorees for RWU are Cavanaugh, Cunninham, and McErlain.

Beck netted CCC Offensive Player of the Year honors for Roger Williams, becoming the third different Hawk to earn the award that will return to Bristol for the first time since Kaelin Hogan '18 got the honor for the second-straight year back in 2018. It was much deserved as she was the leading scorer on the fourth-most prolific offense in the nation. Beck ranks second in the conference in points (69), tied for fourth in goals (47), and sixth in assists, making her the only player in the conference to place in the top-seven in both goals and assists.

Joining her on the first team is the conference's top distributer, Norton. Her 38 helpers lead the CCC, and rank tied for 27th nationally. When she opted to shoot instead of pass, Norton was incredibly efficient finding the back of the net on an even 50% of her 54 shots on the season, a mark that is 13th among players with 25 or more goals scored this season.

Leading that group of efficient scorers is Cavanaugh who tallied goals on a ridiculous 67.2% of her 58 shot attempts, to finish with 39 goals, the ninth-most in the CCC, while adding a dozen assists. She was also the team's top player in collecting draws and her 70 draw controls are the third-most in the conference.

Anchoring a defense that is tied for tenth in the nation allowing a mere 6.40 goals per game is the Drain. Her impact is only partially reflected in the stats where she is 17th in the CCC and second on the Hawks in caused turnovers (17) and fourth on the RWU roster with 24 ground balls.

In net and earning the first all-conference nod of her career is Goodwin as she paces the conference in wins with 14. While not often tested due to the suffocating defense in front of her, Goodwin was nonetheless stout when she was challenged resulting in a 49.2% save percentage that ranks second in the conference. Her 6.84 goals against average is 12th in the nation and is a full two goals lower than that of the next best mark in the CCC, all while she is third in minutes played in net with 825:00.

Sarazin receives her fourth All-CCC selection of her distinguished career in Bristol after another season as one of the top two-way offensive threats in the conference. She posted a career-high with 40 goals scored, the seventh-most in the league, shooting at a robust 56.3% rate and adding 16 assists to also rank seventh with 56 total points.

Not far behind her in scoring is Cunningham who currently ranks 11th in points with 50 and tied for tenth in goals with 36. Cunningham has a case as the team's most well-rounded player as, in addition to her scoring, she is exceptional on draws, ranking seventh in the conference and second on the team in draw controls with 59. Defensively, her 18 caused turnovers pace the Hawks and are good for a tie for 11th in the CCC and she has collected 25 ground balls, the third-most on the roster.

The only two players who rank ahead of Cunningham in ground balls are the team's final two All-CCC selections, McErlain and Creegan. McErlain is tied for 17th in the CCC with 33 ground balls while adding 15 caused turnovers and is a threat to score as she has totaled 20 goals this season. Creegan, meanwhile, is the lone freshman on the Hawks to earn an all-conference nod and is tied for tenth in the CCC with 36 ground balls.
